Statement Regarding the FBI’s Shield of Bravery Award, the Shooting Death of LaVoy Finicum, and the Injury of Ryan Bundy

Recently FBI Director Kash Patel presented the Bureau’s Shield of Bravery award to Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) operators involved in the 2016 Malheur Wildlife Refuge standoff. The justification for this award, as reported, contains numerous factual inaccuracies about the events of January 26, 2016, inaccuracies that not only defame the memory of LaVoy Finicum but also
obscure the truth about what happened to Ryan Bundy, who still carries a bullet in his arm from that day.

We cannot remain silent as falsehoods are institutionalized as “bravery.”

The award citation describes a sequence of events that is demonstrably false:

Clandestine Meeting
- The award states that LaVoy and others were traveling to a “clandestine meeting.”
- In fact, LaVoy was en route to a publicly announced meeting with Grant County Sheriff Glenn Palmer, scheduled for that afternoon, attended by hundreds of citizens.
Ramming a Vehicle and Pinning an Agent
- The award citation claims LaVoy rammed his truck into an FBI vehicle, trapping an agent.
- The FBI’s own aerial video shows LaVoy’s truck swerving off the road into a snowbank to miss hitting an officer after being blocked by law enforcement. There was no ramming. There was no pinned agent. In-fact the footage shows that Lavoy intentionally swerved further into the snow to avoid hitting an officer.
Attempt to Fire on Officers
- The award states that LaVoy attempted to fire on Oregon State Police (OSP).
- Multiple witnesses and video evidence show LaVoy exiting the truck with hands raised. The OSP admitted shooting him three times when he lowered his arms, but there is absolutely no evidence he aimed or fired a weapon at officers.

These are facts established by official investigations:

Oregon State Police (OSP) admitted firing six rounds: three at LaVoy’s truck as it approached the roadblock, and three more that struck and killed him.
The DOJ Office of Inspector General (OIG) later found that FBI HRT operators fired at least two shots:
- One struck the roof of LaVoy’s truck.
- One missed entirely.
These FBI shots were not disclosed at the time. In fact, the FBI agents (that were recently awarded) denied firing at all.
Shell casings from FBI rifles were ultimately logged into evidence being found by OSP investigators. This is how we know FBI shots occurred.
Aerial surveillance video reviewed by the OIG showed the FBI agents (that were recently awarded) “appearing to pick up objects from the roadway” immediately after the shooting — an action inconsistent with proper crime-scene procedure.
The OIG criticized the FBI’s handling of evidence and later one FBI agents (that was recently awarded) was charged with three counts of “Making False Statements” and two counts of “Obstruction of Justice”. Because of the “lack of evidence” he was acquitted.

Ryan Bundy was a passenger in LaVoy’s truck. During the shooting, he was struck in the arm by a bullet. Nearly ten years later, the bullet remains lodged in his body.

As bullets entered the vehicle Ryan turned around in his seat, kneeling with his knees on the floor. Had he been sitting in the normal upright position, the trajectory of the bullet that hit him would most certainly have entered his head. His survival depended on that small, fateful shift in posture. Rather than going through his head the bullet entered into his arm.

FBI Hostage Rescue Team members later testified in court that they are highly trained marksmen. Though LaVoy’s truck had tinted windows, an experienced shooter could approximate where a rear passenger would normally sit. Taken together, these facts raise a sobering question; was the shot which struck Ryan Bundy in the arm intended to kill him?

The government has never accounted for this round. Oregon State Police attributed its shots to LaVoy’s fatal wounds. FBI agents denied ever shooting. Yet Ryan’s wound remains unexplained.

Now, in light of the FBI’s continued false narrative, Ryan Bundy will undergo surgery to have this bullet removed. The bullet will be submitted to an independent forensic laboratory for full ballistics testing.

The official record acknowledges at least two FBI shots, but aerial footage showing agents picking up objects raises another disturbing question: were more shots fired by the FBI than the government has admitted?

If FBI operators removed casings from the roadway, as the OIG footage suggests, then the true number of FBI rounds may never have been fully reported.
If so, one of those unacknowledged rounds could be the very bullet that struck Ryan Bundy.
The only way to resolve this uncertainty is through forensic testing of the bullet that has remained in Ryan’s arm for nearly a decade.

FBI Director, Kash Patel, has now chosen to give medals of honor to agents based on a false
account:

That LaVoy Finicum was secretly conspiring, when he was publicly meeting with a sheriff and hundreds of people.
That he rammed an FBI vehicle and trapped an agent, when he swerved into snow.
That he attempted to shoot at officers.
That FBI agents acted heroically, when in fact the Bureau’s own Inspector General found they fired shots, failed to disclose them, misrepresented the truth and possibly removed and hid evidence.

Honoring agents on the basis of these distortions does violence to the truth and to the memory of LaVoy Finicum. It also insults every American who expects transparency from their government.

Why the FBI Director is issuing these awards under the circumstances and after nearly a decade is unclear and concerning.

Giving the established fact and recent FBI awards the Bundy Family Requests:

That the FBI release the full text of the Shield of Bravery award citations and the supporting
justification memos.
That Congressional committees conduct a public review of the award narrative against the
factual record.
That the FBI correct or rescind statements that contradict established video, forensic
analysis, and eyewitness testimony.
That the FBI release Lavoy’s truck, permitting independent investigators to examine the
bullet holes and verify the evidence.
That the FBI and OSP cooperate fully in the ballistics comparison once Ryan Bundy’s bullet
is removed.

This is not about vengeance. This is about truth. For nine years, the official story has shifted and hidden behind denials. Now, as medals are pinned on the very agents involved, Ryan Bundy will
bear the pain once more to give the American people a piece of unalterable evidence: the bullet in his arm.

That bullet may prove not only that the FBI agent fired shots that they did not admit — but that one of those hidden rounds struck Ryan himself. And the circumstances of that shot suggest it was
meant to take his life.

Depending on what the forensic testing reveals, Ryan and the Bundy family will be reviewing all available legal options, including the possibility of civil action, to ensure accountability.

The bullet will speak the truth, it’s past time for FBI to do the same.

UPDATE (6/2/2024): Originally on May 15th, 2024 we sent out a survey asking every Gubernatorial candidate 14 “real” questions. Candidate responses are published below. We hope that more answers will still come in. We invite you to email the candidates and tell them that these questions are important to you and ask them to answer these questions.

Later this summer, we’ll review all answers that come in, and Defending Utah will give our personal opinion on what we think of the answers given. But regardless of the answer, just being willing to answer this survey speaks volumes about the candidates.

It’s disappointing how few candidates are willing to answer these questions.

Elections often focus on emotional issues that have nothing to do with the actual constitutional knowledge and compliance that our nation is starving for.

We claim to love the constitution, but we are hypocritically lacking in our own understanding, and this shows in the wrong questions we’re asking candidates.

This is a primary reason candidates don’t have to actually care about the constitution, because when push comes to shove, we care more about the emotionally charged issue of the day, than actual constitutional compliance.

Defending Utah’s hope is that we can all learn to ask the real questions that matter, so that we can change the election culture to focus on what matters. If we shift towards demanding real constitutional knowledge and compliance, instead of demanding what someone’s going to do about the latest emotional headline, then we’ll move the goalpost for elected officials.

Our constitution will regain the life it needs, when we start speaking to it. We hope the public will encourage all candidates to care about this survey and all issues at the constitutional level.

1. As governor, your constitutional oath gives you the power to enforce the constitution unilaterally within your executive authority if other departments are violating it. Do you understand and accept that the state and federal constitutions are your job description?

2. Can you convince me that you understand the purpose of our constitutions?

3. What would you do if you heard just one citizen of Utah was having their property rights taken without proper due process, and that such action was authorized by legislation?

4. Do you accept the state’s claim to “own all the water” as legitimate or do you accept that all water is owned by whoever has deed to it and lawfully obtained that water from the previous owner?

5. If a law is in conflict with the state constitution, what power do you have to make the effects of the law void?

6. Would you be willing to attend a monthly constitution training course from a well-known doctorate of constitutional studies university teacher as part of your ongoing job training as governor?

7. What will you do about the rampant executive branch abuse of authority of enforcing rules that are not laws, under the color of law?

8. If a local town or an individual chooses to ignore a law, state or federal, because they understand it to violate the constitutions, will you go out of your way to support them?

9. Will you publicly announce that the claims of drought in Utah have been fraudulent and that the great salt lake is not dying, but being used for lithium mining?

10. The Utah constitution’s free market clause is one of the most blatantly ignored sections. Will you take executive action, as authorized by your constitutional oath, to end the use of all public private partnerships in Utah?

11. Will you take action to end the influence of regional governments that are not part of our constitutional framework which act out as if they rule behind-the-scenes, as their actions are often rubber stamped by government authorities?

12. Will you shut down all smart metering in the state, as such widespread surveillance of the people does not come as the result any warrant to gather the vast personal data that is being gathered. And “general warrants” are not constitutional, and was even one of the causes of the American Revolution.

13. Will you end Utah’s support for unconstitutional surveillance by shutting off the water supply to the NSA data center? Such action would arguably be a proper way to nullify federal overreach using the power of your oath of office to defend the citizens of Utah.

14. Will you take unilateral action as authorized by your oath of office to enforce that all Utah law enforcement is accountable if they execute punishment on Utah citizens without due process, such as stealing their property or killing them?

1. As governor, your constitutional oath gives you the power to enforce the constitution unilaterally within your executive authority if other departments are violating it. Do you understand and accept that the state and federal constitutions are your job description?

It is the duty and obligation of a Governor to abide by the constitution of our State and Federal Government, and to protect its values and cause, against all enemies foreign and domestic. However, it is the obligation of the Governor to prioritize and safeguard at all cost, the constitution and values of his/her STATE above all others, to include the Federal Government if need be. S/He is employed by the State and its people, not by the Federal Government. Yes, I understand wholeheartedly and accept that responsibility.

2. Can you convince me that you understand the purpose of our constitutions?

The constitution has always been clear on its purpose, the purpose of the constitution does not give the governor and other state or federal officials the power to run the government, but the power to govern the people in a way (with respects to rights) that allows the PEOPLE to run the government.

3. What would you do if you heard just one citizen of Utah was having their property rights taken without proper due process, and that such action was authorized by legislation?

If no crime was committed by the citizen, then that citizen has been wronged and the legislative party who authorized such an act ought to be removed from their position by majority vote of the people and not by the judicial system.

4. Do you accept the state’s claim to “own all the water” as legitimate or do you accept that all water is owned by whoever has deed to it and lawfully obtained that water from the previous owner?

I do not accept the state’s claim. The state did not produce water and therefore does not own any right to charge or take away such rights from others. If a natural water source was found on private property, it belongs to the owner of said property. The purchasement of property, is accompanied by the entitlement to ALL resources found therein or abandoned by previous owners (to include, water, trees, buildings, minerals, nature (river and streams that run through the property), and all natural resources. The jurisdiction of the State, is restricted to state own properties only or water source that has been contained, filtered and produced to general public

5. If a law is in conflict with the state constitution, what power do you have to make the effects of the law void?

The power of the Governor is limited to the support of his / her constituents in legislative power. If it is beyond a reasonable doubt that a law is in conflict with the constitution of the state, the governor’s loyalty is to the people and is therefore required to stand on the side of the people. If legislation and governor do not agree to void said law, then the voice of the people must be heard, whether to void the law, or remove the legislative body from office that argues otherwise with no logical reason to the purpose of maintaining that law.

6. Would you be willing to attend a monthly constitution training course from a well-known doctorate of constitutional studies university teacher as part of your ongoing job training as governor?

Yes, I would be willing and it should be required. All employment across the state requires ongoing learning and understanding of each job description. Being Governor, is no exception

7. What will you do about the rampant executive branch abuse of authority of enforcing rules that are not laws, under the color of law?

Depending on how long they have been in office, they will be treated like any other employee of this state; an at will employee. They will be warned, they will be cited; and if the behavior continues, they will be terminated from their employment despite the length of term left in their service.

If any law is neither black nor white on whether it is for or against the people, it should and WILL always rule in favor of the people. It will continue to do so, until our legislative parties and lawmakers, establish laws that are not up for personal interpretation by attorneys, Law Enforcement or biased judgement. This will ensure that a judicial sentencing is equal, fair and just for all.

8. If a local town or an individual chooses to ignore a law, state or federal, because they understand it to violate the constitutions, will you go out of your way to support them?

We would need to first investigate and understand why said town or individual feels that their constitutional right is being violated. A governor should not be hasty to side with either party. The claim of the town/individual that a violation of constitutional right is at play, needs to be based on what is widely accepted as the correct interpretation of that constitutional right. The Governor is not only a voice of the people, but a mediator of balance and tranquility within his governance.

9. Will you publicly announce that the claims of drought in Utah have be en fraudulent and that the great salt lake is not dying, but being used for lithium mining?

If after personal investigation into the matter proves the claim to be correct, then yes, I would make a public announcement revealing the truth of it all and correcting what has been wrong or hidden. The duty and obligation of the Governor is to the people first.

10. The Utah constitution’s free market clause is one of the most blatantly ignored sections. Will you take executive action, as authorized by your constitutional oath, to end the use of all public private partnerships in Utah?

Most definitely, without a second thought. It is a conflict of interest for such transactions to be occurring in the first place. The government should not be playing favorite or buddy buddy with the private sectors, it belongs to the citizens of the state. Its role is to remain neutral in the service of its citizens; equally. If any partnership whatsoever is necessary to be between the government and private sector, it is the duty of the governor to make the reason known to the public immediately. If partnership is required, then the government must hold the majority share so long as it is in favor of the people and not the partner nor itself.

11. Will you take action to end the influence of regional governments that are not part of our constitutional framework which act out as if they rule behind-the-scenes, as their actions are often rubber stamped by government authorities?

As previously mentioned, the duty of the Governor is to the citizens of his/her state. It needs to be made clear, written in stone; that all those elected by the people, have an obligation bound by laws, to serve OUR people first and foremost in all things. The responsibility of care that other governments needs; falls on their own people first, then their own government, then our federal government and so forth with our state and its people being the last of its options for support, for influence, for say.

12. Will you shut down all smart metering in the state, as such widespread surveillance of the people does not come as the result any warrant to gather the vast personal data that is being gathered. And “general warrants” are not constitutional, and was even one of the causes of the American Revolution.

The issuer of any warrants that violates constitutional rights and or privacy, must be held to a higher standard and charged at higher cost. This will ensure that warrants are not issued senselessly. The state shall have the right on public properties and individuals the right on private properties. If called for, I WILL shut down any and all intrusive surveillance that the state utilizes to look into vehicles, personal lives or homes; that has no true purpose. However, any data collected about an individual, shall remain confidential unless required for official reasons (to notify, to apprehend, to maintain records and so forth)

13. Will you end Utah’s support for unconstitutional surveillance by shutting off the water supply to the NSA data center? Such action would arguably be a proper way to nullify federal overreach using the power of your oath of office to defend the citizens of Utah.

As mentioned above, while the Governor is obligated to defend the citizens of the State of Utah; he/she should not be hasty in his / her action causing more distress in the future then needs be. My perspective is this, the Federal Government is an aggressive cancerous tumor that requires time, patience and skilled professionals to remove. If we eradicate the tumor quickly, it will cling on to other vital parts of the body and it could cause the state to bleed out or fall to a vegetative state. As a Governor, to protect my citizens, my first step would be to team up with others of the profession (i.e Texas and other states who are feeling the wrongs of the federal government) and together, we will work to remove the tumor one root at a time, controlling any bleeds and making sure that our states remains stable, healthy and unharmed by our act to push back against the Federal Government.

14. Will you take unilateral action as authorized by your oath of office to enforce that all Utah law enforcement is accountable if they execute punishment on Utah citizens without due process, such as stealing their property or killing them?

Being prior law enforcement myself, I know that accountability needs to be enforced with our officers; at all levels. But there needs to be checks and balances, meaning; officers themselves are not bad people, but are being trained to do bad things under the safety of the law. There are a lot of great officers, but at the same time there is a lot of toxic blood in police departments that’s been passed down from one generation of law enforcement to another, and we need to remove all that toxic blood, if we want a healthier relationship between law and people.

All actions will be answered with justice, but we must first fix what is broken by having officers be accountable to their own communities first before others. We need to restore the respect that has been lost from our law enforcement profession, most importantly, we need to restore the trust of the people in our officers to SERVE and PROTECT their communities, not CRIMINALIZE and HUNT for people to convict.

Conservative US Congress Candidate Thankful to be Masked?

That One Time…. When a current candidate for US Congress (Celeste Maloy), chosen by the “conservative” political party of a state, has a certain post from the past fake-pandemic era being spread around social media that looks the opposite of “conservative”.

Many in the community have asked…

“Was she promoting propaganda deliberately”?

“Was she on the side of the tyranny last time”?

“Where will she be the next time”?

It was documented in the book Tragedy and Hope (where the author was able to study the secret inside workings of the elite), that the elite play this game with all of us. They gain control all the top candidate choices, and then they try to guilt us into voting for the “lesser” evils, because they control both parties, and often all the top candidates within the major political parties. This leads to frustration when we work hard for change, but notice that things really don’t get better for our country over the years. The elite’s agenda moves forward.

Tragedy and Hope is a very big book, and it is a difficult read for many, we recommend the “cliff notes” version by Cleon Skousen, called The Naked Capitalist.

During the fake Covid pandemic (every aspect of which has been thoroughly debunked in alternative media not owned and controlled by the globalists) one favorite tactic was to use their fake tests for the never-proven-to-exist virus on sewage exiting various municipalities. The inevitable false positive results then resulted in claims of people being sick and measures such as lock-downs and mask mandates needing to continue or be made stricter.

So now in the summer of 2023 after most people are sick of hearing about Covid and will never trust health “experts” ever again, authorities such as the WHO, CDC, and the media outlets and politicians that serve them continue to go forward as though they were never wrong about anything and everyone trusts their “science” and their “guidance.”

As an example of this, on Saturday July 15^th, 2023, the Deseret News posted this article about the PREDICT Act, which was introduced by a bipartisan group of senators including Senator Mitt Romney of Utah. The Public Health Response and Emergency Detection Through Integrated Wastewater Surveillance Act (good luck figuring out how PREDICT stands for this), is meant to enhance the pseudo-scientific process whereby sewage (wastewater) is tested with bogus tests to declare an area to be experiencing a pandemic and therefore supposedly in need of various pseudo-scientific interventions.

This is also further proof that the scam that was at its worst in 2020 to 2021 will continue to be used by those who wish to destroy all liberty worldwide in the name of “public health.” And a reminder that many of the most ardent and vocal supporters of “science” are the worst pseudo-scientists on the planet who put their political beliefs above real science and then reject anything that goes against their beliefs, and instantly accept anything, no matter how ridiculous, that supports them.

SOLUTIONS NOTE: What can we do about child trafficking?

With our publications and research, we always like to give understandable, actionable solutions, to the real problems that we talk about.

Shut down, or extremely limit, Child Protective Services. Get CPS offices out of children’s hospitals where they take children from healthy, loving homes and put them in a very risky foster care environment, where their chances of abuse and even being trafficked are astronomically increased. This is the most common method of trafficking children in America, and the profit comes from federal money that is passed around. If CPS does continue to exist, we must restore the right to a jury trial for parents to better align with the constitution. Also, support Ammon Bundy in his defense, after he rescued a baby for being trafficked.

Vigilantes Cut Through Red Tape

A senior Utah assistant attorney general is said to have opined, “Sean Reyes has become Mark Shurtleff far faster than Mark Shurtleff.”

Yes, the same Mark Shurtleff who wore a badge and carried a concealed weapon. The same Mark Shurtleff who hired his friend to run a police force inside the AG’s office. The same Mark Shurtleff who—instead of prosecuting some suspected swindlers—solicited campaign donations from them.

Where Shurtleff went on stage at a sleazy multi-‐level marketing convention to lead cheers, Reyes went a step further when, for a weekend, he joined a private military unit to rescue purported sex slaves in Columbia, South America. He carried a badge but kept it out of sight because he was undercover. Afterwards Reyes suggested Utahns donate to the group, makes appearances at its fundraisers and promotes the entity to Utah police chiefs.

The Deseret News was among all major Utah media who covered the attorney general’s swashbuckling adventure:

Attorney General Sean Reyes made a secret trip to Colombia last October as part of an operation to rescue child sex slaves. Reyes made the dangerous trek with Operation Underground Railroad, a Utah-‐based nonprofit organization that works with governments around the world in fighting child trafficking.

The organization set up the sting by posing as wealthy investors in a cartel’s plan to build a child sex hotel in the Rosaria Islands off the coast of Cartagena. To celebrate the deal, they planned a party on the small island of Baru, where the traffickers would bring the young girls. Reyes, who speaks Spanish, played the role of translator and bodyguard for the lead investor. “I wanted to get down where I could make a difference, look evil in the eye and stare it down,” he said.

Operation Underground Railroad is the brainchild of former CIA and Homeland Security agent Tim Ballard. As a government employee in California he had worked undercover to detect and arrest pornographers and sex traffickers. Ballard, a Mormon, said he was frustrated with bureaucratic limitations on which children he could save. As LDS Living Magazine described it:

“So Ballard and his wife went to the temple for guidance. The next morning, in what Ballard describes as a “spiritual download,” he received a clear and undeniable answer: “Find the lost children.”
“I knew exactly what that meant. I was to find those kids who were out of our jurisdictional reach by starting a private, nonprofit organization. I didn’t know how, but something in Utah would lead to this.”
“The family moved to Utah in the summer of 2012, and soon everything fell into place for Ballard to found Operation Underground Railroad, which specializes in rescuing children trapped in slavery.
Before I left the government, I called all my contacts in other countries. I asked if they would still let me come in and operate privately, and they all said yes.”
So the father of six assembled a team of former Navy SEALs, ex-‐CIA agents, and other operatives with unique skill sets. Despite not knowing where the money would come from, networking and word of mouth quickly led to enough donations to begin operations in January of 2014.

Child Sex Slave Charity Scams and Hoaxes

Ever since [the Colombian raid] where millions of dollars began flowing to government and charitable anti-‐child trafficking organizations, there have been several scandals and hoaxes.

In 2011 the Dallas Women’s Foundation warned that the country’s human trafficking epidemic was going to hit the city for Super Bowl XLV. The group warned that 100,000 hookers were headed to Dallas, 38,000 of them child sex slaves.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security and state and local police agencies formed a task force to stop the charge. The wave never hit. Yet fundraisers continue to repeat the myth for subsequent Super Bowls and other major athletic events. – Dire warnings are great fundraising tools.

The Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women, a network of nongovernmental organizations, published a report in 2011 examining the record on sex trafficking related to World Cup soccer games, the Olympics and the Super Bowl. It found that, “despite massive media attention, law enforcement measures and efforts by prostitution abolitionist groups, there is no empirical evidence that trafficking for prostitution increases around large sporting events.” It concluded:

Despite the lack of evidence, this idea continues to hold great appeal for prostitution abolitionist groups, anti-‐immigration groups, politicians and some journalists. The resilience of this inaccurate claim could be due to:
• Its usefulness as a fundraising strategy;
• Its effectiveness in grabbing the media and the public’s attention;
• Being a quick, easy way to be seen ‘doing something’ about trafficking;
• Being a more socially acceptable guise for prostitution abolitionist agendas and
anti-‐immigration agendas.

One web site established to debunk sex trafficking myths said “various anti-‐prostitution groups: Traffick911, Not for Sale, Change-‐org, Polaris Project, and the Dallas Women’s Foundation…are anti-‐prostitution groups that tell lies in order to get grant money from the government and charities to pay their high salaries, and get huge amounts of money into their organizations.”

The U.S.’s Invisible Children charity (IC) is now phasing out after being accused of manipulating facts to stop Uganda’s Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) from abducting children, turning the girls into sex salves and the boys into child soldiers. The IC called for the arrest of LRA leader Joseph Kony and asked for greater U.S. involvement against the LRA. The group helped convince President Obama to sign the “Lord’s Resistance Army Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act” and send military troops to Central Africa. The President told the people in attendance “We have seen your reporting, your websites, your blogs, and your video postcards—you have made the plight of the children visible to us all,” according to a Yahoo news story.

The Washington Post recounted how IC “took the world by storm” with the viral video it posted in 2012

The organization started after three young, inexperienced filmmakers produced a DVD whose target audience came to represent a new demographic for charitable giving: American teenagers, most notably young, white, middle-‐ and upper-‐class girls and young women. Through adeptly produced media campaigns that relied heavily on sensationalized films, a strong social media presence and regular collaboration with celebrities, their message resonated strongly with this demographic. The organization’s capacity for grass-‐roots mobilization on an African conflict was almost unprecedented. In doing so, they managed to bring a great deal of attention to the conflict.

But after hyping figures and misrepresenting facts Invisible Children faced a backlash and is fading into oblivion.

Even major news outlets run child slavery stories without checking the facts. In 2006 ABC News reported on two girls it said had been abducted into prostitution. “Debbie, which is not her real name, is one of thousands of young American girls who authorities say have been abducted or lured from their normal lives and made into sex slaves,” ABC reported. “While many Americans have heard of human trafficking in other parts of the world -‐-‐ Thailand, Cambodia, Latin America and Eastern Europe, for example -‐-‐ few people know it happens here in the United States.”

But, according to a CounterPunch report, “Phoenix Police Department press releases describe Debbie as a runaway. Police spokesman Andy Hill told me earlier this week that she was having problems with her family. She left home willingly with a friend, the girlfriend of a pimp, and a few hours later was herself dragooned into prostitution.”

It was Newsweek that published what is perhaps the most publicized sex slave exposé. A cover story last year debunked the story of Somaly Mam, a Cambodian whose 501(c)(3) foundation raised millions to fight sex traffickers. Among her supporters were presidential-‐candidate-‐to-‐be Hillary Clinton, actresses Meg Ryan and Susan Sarandon and New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof.

Mam’s autobiography, “The Road of Lost Innocence,” was an international best-‐seller. It told her story of how she was sold into sex slavery. She said her grandfather put her in a brothel where she was forced to work ten years as a prostitute. She claimed to have been tortured with wires hooked to a car battery.

Mam had purported victims tell chilling stories about beatings and gang rapes. One claimed an angry pimp gouged out one of her eyes. Newsweek found medical records that debunked
that story. Another “victim” “confessed that her story was fabricated and carefully rehearsed for the cameras under Mam’s instruction, and only after she was chosen from a group of girls who
had been put through an audition.”

As for Mam, herself, Newsweek found a relative and childhood friend who said she spent her youth in school not a brothel.

Newsweek said at the heart of the questions surrounding Mam is a debate within the nonprofit sector on the acceptable tactics for fundraising and educating the public.

Mam was also criticized for how her charity managed money. The Cambodia Daily reportedly Mam’s personal financial compensation rose from $0 in 2008 to $85,000 in 2009, $96,000 in 2010, and $125,642 in 2011. Her deputy, Bill Livermore, who later left to form his own anti-‐trafficking organization, was paid $72,375 in 2009, $166,655 in 2010 and $149,580 in 2011.

Laura Parker serves as vice-‐president of communications for the anti-‐trafficking organization, The Exodus Road. The Colorado Springs, Colorado-‐based charity deploys undercover investigators who claim to rescue sex slaves on four continents. Parker believes the Somaly Mam scandal was inevitable but makes anti-‐trafficking fund raising more difficult. Some excepts of Parker’s thoughts:

For two years now I have been using words (both written and spoken) to tell stories and raise money for our start-‐up nonprofit. I’ll be honest, the world of fundraising is much more brutal than I expected. The soil of charitable work and mission efforts is ripe for fraudulent or exploitative storytelling, and perhaps the Somaly Mam scandal is to be expected.

For me, personally, it was the moment a child finds out Santa is really just Mom and Dad sneaking around after the kids are in bed. If Somaly Mam can fool the world for two decades, who can I trust in the counter-‐trafficking world? When people see that an award-‐winning advocate can fool the world (including the experts) for two decades, public trust of charities is dealt a major blow.

The intense pressure can get nonprofit communicators into trouble; it can drive them to embellish the truth. Storytellers have learned that donors, whose financial gifts are the organization’s lifeblood, typically prefer the Hollywood story to the (sometimes) mundane reality of bringing about long-‐term positive change.

Conclusion

If it’s true, as Operation Underground Railroad suggests, that 800,000 child sex slaves are being trafficked into the United States every year, that’s shocking. And someone should do something about it. Which is what O.U.R. says it’s doing

If it’s not true that 800,000 child sex slaves are being trafficked into the United States every year, it’s also shocking. Shocking that anyone would raise money using misrepresentations and material omissions. And someone should do something about it.

The Utah prosecutor best equipped to handle suspected charity fundraising communications fraud and state income tax evasion cases is Sean Reyes.

Feds Drag Show Ruling – NOT What You Think

Headlines everywhere are saying that a federal judge has upheld a drag show’s right to perform in a public park.

Federal court orders St. George City Council to allow Southern Utah Drag Stars show to continue

Concerned citizens are panicking that the government is siding with the targeting of children. But don’t jump to conclusions, the details matter, this is just a political game to counter all the push-back against “Child Targeting Pride Month”. Let’s think through this, step by step.

The danger here is that good people will read the headlines and think that the feds have ruled on the legality of these “family friendly drag shows” (targeting children) and that we lost in the battle to defend children, as if the court has changed the law and made targeting children legal.

But this is not the case at all. Nothing has changed.

This article is to demonstrate to you that this actually proves we are in a strong position, and the pedophiles had to invent this situation in order to fool people into backing off. By them forcing a court decision about a trivial issue, they’re ignoring the real arguments where they would lose in court and in public opinion.

If they are successful, then in the future they’ll say we allowed this and claim it is the new “community standard”. Such a standard will become the real legal precedent. But we’ll prevail if we keep pushing back as a community that we do not accept this standard.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH THESE “DRAG SHOWS”

The problem with these “drag shows” is not that people don’t have the right to be drag queens. People have the right to unpopular opinions and to make themselves look like fools in public. People can believe in drag queens, just like anyone can believe in any religion of their choice. The old Mormon motto applies here, as written by President John Taylor,

There are more people attending to the eleventh commandment in the city of Nauvoo than in any other place of the same size on the globe, that is they mind their own business in Nauvoo, without interfering with others.

The problems with these “drag shows” are:

– (1) The direct targeting of children with sexual content
– (2) Public lewdness, which is illegal under the law. Nationally and at the state level.

We can emphasize that we’ll defend their right to be clowns where there are consenting adults only. This could be an adults-only public area or private area.

Eventually this can push them out of public spaces back into private only if we understand the process. The pedos will lose because they won’t be able to resist the temptation to keep targeting children and pushing the lewdness-boundary.

THE RECENT COURT RULING of 6/19/2023

Court rulings are always going to be very specific to the details of the case.

The ACLU and pedos have set up this court case to stand on a trivial argument about advertising too early, which is more easily won in court. But the headlines can create the illusion that the case is actually about something totally different. Reading between the lines, there’s really nothing newsworthy about this ruling.

Let’s look at what the court concluded in this case:

“Public spaces are public spaces. Public spaces are not private spaces,”

and

“Public spaces are not majority spaces. The First Amendment of the United States Constitution ensures that all citizens, popular or not, majority or minority, conventional or unconventional, have access to public spaces for public expression.”

The city now may not enforce any new advertising prohibitions against the group or its show, Nuffer ruled, ordering that the performance must “take scheduling precedence over any other event.”

As a principled liberty community, the court ruling is a non-issue. In fact, we hope that we also always maintain our own rights to use public spaces to promote family values, our own forms of marriage, and our religious beliefs. Let the best arguments prevail in the public square on opinions, but as for the children, we must never stop standing for them.

CHANGE THE DISCUSSION – WIN THE BATTLE

– Cities may use this case to say “Sorry, we have to allow these shows”, but you need to make sure you know how to keep fighting successfully. Push the issue that the case had nothing to do with the real issues, and therefore does not apply. They can successfully honor the court case and deny these events on different legal grounds.

The court made no ruling whatsoever on the targeting of children, just generic first amendment statements that we actually can agree with. So don’t fight a correct principle, instead fight on the grounds of where the problem actually is. Targeting children and public lewdness.

1. These events are intentionally targeting children. “Family friendly” means targeting children. Using puppets and painting activities and reading books in the library, are all children’s activities. The theme of targeting children is crystal clear.

2. These events violate state and national laws on public lewdness, even intentionally to minors. (Use the laws we’ve listed below with these argument)

If we don’t understand and present the correct arguments, based on correct principles, then we will lose our battles when the pedos actually have a better argument.

Let’s stay focused on the correct arguments, and we can still win in our cities and counties.

ARE THEY REALLY TARGETING CHILDREN?

Our article on last year’s BYU drag show did a full deep dive to prove the undeniable targeting of children. I’ll defer to that article if you need to read it.

ARE THEY REALLY BEING LEWD?

When the drag shows happened last year across the state, they denied in advanced that they would be lewd. So, we gathered the evidence. You need to go these shows and record the evidence, and present them back to the cities and publish them to the public with the lewdness laws. These pedos cannot resist being lewd to the children, because that’s what their real goal is. The non-pedophile drag queens don’t have a problem keeping these to adult-only private spaces. That is their right.

LAWS AGAINST PUBLIC LEWDNESS

1. Utah Code 76-9-702 – Lewdness

2. The Supreme Court has ruled how to determine if something is obscene. We must argue that these shows are intentionally obscene on these grounds (The following is from Justice.gov):

The U.S. Supreme Court established the test that judges and juries use to determine whether matter is obscene in three major cases: Miller v. California, 413 U.S. 15, 24-25 (1973); Smith v. United States, 431 U.S. 291, 300-02, 309 (1977); and Pope v. Illinois, 481 U.S. 497, 500-01 (1987). The three-pronged Miller test is as follows:

Whether the average person, applying contemporary adult community standards, finds that the matter, taken as a whole, appeals to prurient interests (i.e., an erotic, lascivious, abnormal, unhealthy, degrading, shameful, or morbid interest in nudity, sex, or excretion);

Whether the average person, applying contemporary adult community standards, finds that the matter depicts or describes sexual conduct in a patently offensive way (i.e., ultimate sexual acts, normal or perverted, actual or simulated, masturbation, excretory functions, lewd exhibition of the genitals, or sado-masochistic sexual abuse); and

Whether a reasonable person finds that the matter, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.

Any material that satisfies this three-pronged test may be found obscene.

Notice the theme is the community standards. Those standards are set by how well we make our public arguments, and that we don’t back down and we continue to maintain the argument indefinitely until we win in defense of children.

LAWS AGAINST CHILD GROOMING

Child grooming refers to an act of deliberately establishing an emotional connection with a child to prepare the child for child abuse.

Grooming is the act of establishing a close relationship with a child to prep them for abuse later on. The action of grooming is not a crime in and of itself. However, facilitating a crime especially one of a sexual nature is considered criminal activity.

If any of these laws prove insufficient, this battle can easily lay the groundwork of public pressure to get the laws updated as needed. What’s important here is the spirit of the law is laid out clearly, and that’s enough to continue this argument with city councils.

KEEP UP THE FIGHT – ACTION ITEMS

Again, let’s stay focused on the correct arguments, and we can still win these local battles and we can win in the war against children overall.

– Keep pushing your city and county BY STATING THE ACTUAL PROBLEM (lewdness and targeting children).

– When they still have drag events, show up and record and document the lewdness and anything that shows how they target children.
